Leadership in Sustainable Education
A new curricular initiative to make study of the environment and sustainability a defining characteristic of a Dickinson education was launched with the opening of the 2008-2009 academic year. The initiative is made necessary by the growing human footprint that is transforming the Earth and eroding the capacity of environmental, social, and economic systems to sustain enriching, healthy lives, attain social justice and freedoms, and protect biodiversity and natural wealth. The need is amplified by our continuing failure to extend access to the means for attaining a high quality of life to the large proportion of the world’s population that lives in poverty. But the initiative is also inspired of hope and a pragmatic assessment that solutions for a sustainable future are feasible – feasible for this and coming generations if prepared with the knowledge, skills, global awareness, and sense of citizenship that are necessary to the challenge.
